I watched IGNs video review and they DO run faster, but hell if I know how to make them do so. I will look over the control options, but it might be skill related?

You need to hold the sprint key, the horse has an invisible stamina bar, so you can only sprint at full speed for a little bit. It is stupid, a horse should out run any person/player/npc easily in Skyrim, and not get tired after a few seconds.

Hopefully it will be one of the first things to be modded.

There should be a way to mod the character Run Speed. I did that in Oblivion and never bothered with the whole horse thing which was clunky.

There is, you can type in "player.setav speedmult x" where x is a number, 100 is default apparently, I use 120 generally, 9001 and you go into the ocean for a while...
Also, when using it, you can have press the Walk button for at least 1 second, for the game to realize that you changed it.

    Merry Gaming.

Average non-sprint speed on horseback is about the same as unencumbered sprint speed on foot, so the horse is essentially unlimited sprint + a sprint boost. I am a bit miffed that there's no first person view though - who thought making the horse always turn in the direction of the camera and forcing third person would be a good idea?
