Since most Windows Vista computers have cards that were developed for DirectX 10, the majority will only be able to run DirectX 11 with limited functionality. If your card isn't compliant with DirectX 11 standards, the runtime will disable functions introduced with DirectX 11.

So yes, it is compatible with Windows Vista, but if you fail to meet the hardware standards for DirectX 11, you're going to be using the DirectX 10 functions instead of DirectX 11 (some functions that handle the memory usage better will work, but you're not gaining any benefits in graphics display at all).

    To make it (relatively) simple:

Windows XP: DX9 ONLY (yes, there are supposed workarounds, but basically it's DX9 - doesn't matter if you have a GeForce 6XXX series or a GTX 2XX, you get DX9 either way.)

Windows Vista: DX up to 11, as long as you have a DX11 compliant card. (DirectX is actually a set of instructions, DX11 includes instructions from earlier DX versions, so some DX11 instructions may be available although your card is not fully DX11 compliant. (Such as a DX10 or 10.1 card, for example the nVidia GeForce GTX 2XX series))

For full DX11 support a HD 5XXX series card (5970 is the highest by the way) and Windows Vista (or 7) is required. Fermi cards have been released for a very selected amount of people (hardware and software developers, a few reviewers and the likes - it is NOT available as OEM or Retail yet), but when it arrives it will also (based on driver support of course) fully support DX11 instructions.

Windows 7: Basically the same as above (Vista), as of this time the support for Vista and W7 is pretty much identical - the future may change this with further DX and drivers development however.

No, they haven't. Not even to developers or reviewers.

I've been following this for quite a while, they MAY be going out to reviewers in March...but they've announced that before and failed on it.

Trust me, they have. A select few has seen engineering samples of Fermi cards. I wasn't 100% whether any reviewers had got their hands on any, but ES samples have been sent out. (Certain developers have gotten, don't know the specifics of which parties have procured those though.)

A select few have supposedly seen Fermi play demos, that's it. NO ONE has one yet outside of nV. Not reviewers, not developers, not even the bloody AIBs yet.

Anything else you've heard is simply a lie.

Hmm, well I haven't "heard" anything - I have seen a Fermi-based ES sample card at work. At a demonstration, yes, (As an example: Link - don't go telling people there are no Fermi-based boards when you don't have the intel (no pun intended ^^) mate. Yes, these are most likely internal ES's.) and I doubt there are any ES out "in the wild" yet though.

Unknown as to what variant of the GF100 Fermi-based cards this sample was, but yes, it was a Fermi. (Not one of the fake Fermis nVidia demonstrated a few months back)

I'm sorry, I simply don't believe you. I can't believe you have one when no AIBs do.

The link was the CES viddy of questionable origin, woo.
