From what i have heard, good ending = you die, bad ending = you die, bad ending with some specific things = you live.
To get the ending where you live, you need to rescue one little one and harvest one little one, kill at least one choice character (sofia dies) and you will be alive. That is just what i heard im going through again to get the bad - your alive, ending so i dont know if its true or not.

The game appears to have a multi-stage ending with 2 specific endings.. both ways has you dying, however things look different and the speeches are of different tones.. I guess what 2K meant was that there was going to be a great deal of variety IN your chosen ending, depending on who you killed and whatnot the ending video would be pieced together to follow that.

    *edit*
There are technically 4 different endings, 2 in which you have disappointed elanore, and 1 in which you are utterly evil and she takes after you, and 1 in which you are good and she loves you. In 3 of the ending you get your adam drained by elanore, and in the last one you brush away the needle and go and stare in the water as you slowly die, with elanore sitting beside you feet in the water. The leadup is dependent on what you did in the game but the final setup depends on only a few different elements limited to harvest/saved count and some key elements in the final stage when you are directly working with big sister elanore.

If you get the "Savior" achievement, after getting blown up and crawling onto the lifeboat, you manage to reach the top, but are essentially dying. Your daughter drains your ADAM, killing you physically, but metaphysically, you still live on through her, as she has your memories and consciousness. She specifically mentions that you will "whisper over her shoulder" as well.

Technically what I said. But there is this...You were dead before the game began, so you're really supposed to die again anyway, right?

Thats travelling into the realm of ethics. (Games generally stride around those issues). Since he WAS technically dead at the start, sure, you could assume that he was mean't to die. But being re-made doesn't mean temporary, you are for all intents and purposes another life when you are remade. I don't see where you are getting the idea that just because you are a clone, you deserve to die.

honestly you are thinking way too hard on this

    1. its a game
    2. the real reason you die no matter what is cause it is crafting Bioshock 3's storyline

Eh, I guess based on that logic your character does have to die, otherwise its just a loose plot point that would have to be wrapped up somehow in the sequel.
