Defending the ark any tips?

I allways fail no matter how many enemies I kill.The ark always gets destroyed.Is there something else I must do besides shooting the enemies cruisers retractable balls and guns.Any help would appreciated.

Nevermind I gave up and used the saved game posted here.Was able complete all other chapters after defending the ark with no problem.
