The latest patch is 1.02a. Patch 1.03 is an unofficial patch.

I am using retail version trainer 1.02. Initially i had the game crashing or some crap from explorer encounter a problem and needs to close the program.
My work around, click the trainer and start the game. Do not activate trainer wait for the game to load and after a few seconds activate trainer. It works for me

The badlink from which you are refering to is 1.02 and thats how the patch installed itself and thats how it updated to 1.01. So i have no idea what they are doing.

I have only ever had the game crash from the trainer in scenarios where I have tried using the wrong trainer. I.e. the trainer version didn't match the game version. I think maybe some people download the steam trainer when they should be using the retail trainer, or vice versa.
If you are positive the trainer version and game version are the same, then try reinstalling the game 1.01 patch or 1.02 patch, whichever you use. Sometimes the patch doesn't install correctly which would cause the higher version trainer not to work.

My humble apologies to Pwizard as it was a stupid link from Bioware that was saying that it was 1.02 when it was 1.01. The 1.01 is 15MB.
The correct link is the following "social.bioware.com/page/da-patches", the 1.02 should be 37mb and then the trainer 1.02 will work.

No there is definitely a problem with the trainer as far as I can tell, no matter what you do the game will crash. There are instances where I can load the game and have the game running for a short while and then all of a sudden, the game just freezes and crashes on me.

Run the file DAoriginsconfig file. Goto the GAME tab and look at the version that it says on DAorigins.exe. If it is not 1.02 then get patch 1.02 from bioware website (37mb) and the trainer will work.
