there is 1 thing you can do about this and that is to not keep the game up to date.

right click on the l4d2 line in the my game tab of your steam client and choose options in de menu, now go to the updates tab and select do not automatically update this game.
now click close and it will not update the game anymore.

In addition, it does not make any difference what-so-ever, if I set the game in Steam to NOT automatically update! The moment I close the Steam applet, the setting is changed back to auto update.

The option to not automatically update lasts for one session only (afaik). It also is immediately disregarded if a patch has been released and you launch the game afterwards (it will bring up the dialog forcing you to wait while it patches).

The only real solution is to use Go Offline in the File menu and run steam in this mode. It'll bother you everytime you launch it to restart in online mode, but ignore that. You don't actually have to be disconnected from the Internet for this to function.

I used this when I was camping for a week to play some games without having to use airtime on an air card or something on my laptop.

Given the integrated online features and game modes in l4d2, I'm actually curious to see if this would work, as I ran FO3, SR2, and Prototype in offline mode.

problem is, if you stop updates, you can't play w/your buddies, unless they stop at the same point as you.

    Thanks for the updated trainer!!

I think I hate steam's auto update. It happens even if you are in offline mode. How is that right??!??
