The way I understand the story is that thier status when they are consripted is already a Grey Warden. Neither noble or royalty but respected by both. Duncan is seen as one of the most important profile in Ferelden, respected even by the king himself but he was never seen as a noble or royalty in the game.

Most of the Grey Wardens would not hold a position in the palace since thier first priority is being a Grey Warden first before anything else. Even if the Warden happens to be a king, his priority is still being a Grey Warden. Beisdes, they all have to die early anyway because of the taint, so Alistair may have to work harder to make a new heir before he gone . This is how I understand the status of the Grey Warden.

The problem is that you're a mage. As is stated at one point (in redcliffe IIRC), a mage is a mage and is only part of the circle. Any wordly claims he or she has are voided.

Just beat it last night as a human female noble. I don't know if its possible to marry Alistar there either. If it is, you can't have him as king. My gal walked through fire and hell to see him made king, and as his lover and trusted friend, I figured I'd be a shoe in as queen.

Then after he's crowned, you speak to each other about duty. Duty to the gray wardens, duty to the crown. As the king.. and as someone who will die young as a gray warden... he will need to sire an heir... and an unfortunate truth is that he doesn't think its possible for two gray wardens to concieve a child... so he breaks it off, in the hopes it will be easier now then later. My girl was so heartbroken that when the final battle came, she wished him a happy life and prosperous kingdom... and ended the blight and her life.

I saved my game often and I'm going to try a few more options and see if its possible yet.

Played through again at the landsmeet. You can marry him as a human noble but there are a few things to keep in mind.

At the landsmeet you'll need to call Loghain out and win the support of the people. After dueling him, you'll have to have him slain, otherwise Alistar will leave your group. Once slained, you can take charge of the meeting and declare the new king. I did this the first time, but one of the options just nominates Alistar by himself, and if you think on it more, a later option nominates Alistar, and you nominate yourself as queen. In order to actually get married and become queen, you must later accept Morrigan's proposal to concieve a child that will take the place of either you or Alistar, since to end the blight a Gray Warden must die.
