I have already put about 12 hours into this game and need to know how deep I should get into the side quests right now. Basically what I need to know is if I can continue playing my character after the final game battle or if the game ends there and I need to finish up all my side quests before then. I just don't want to plan on finishing up some later and then be out of luck at the end.

Yes but you cant do side quests from the original story. Only the dlc. I suggest to do all side q. before the final battle(before going to red castle) And also everyone to make a savegame before entering.

which means you can only do warden keep quests.
you can save the stone keeper quest for the end too I am not sure but I did it before doing the final battle so I can see the ending for the "bonus" character from that DLC quest.
