So I know this problem is annoying but there are ways around it. One is to use a program called Tunngle (Google it.). It creates a online virtual private network treating you and your friends like your on a local area network. It work's I have been playing all morning. Register for free, download and install the program.
The program is in German so dont try to read anything unless you actually can, for the most part just hit "Ja". Once logged in the program goto Community > Netzwork > Browser let it load.
Then on the left side click "Action" and then "Borderlands" and opoen your game. You can check the "LAN" area to see if it worked. I would suggest hosting a Private game online and not a LAN, the private match you can invite your friends, the LAN they need to look for the name and it has long loading times.
That's it have fun!

The way I did it was to forward the ports from my router to my pc and to open the ports on windows firewall. Works perfectly fine now.
(the ports I have opened are 7777, 28900, 27900, 29900, 29901, 28910, 6500, 9899, 3783, 13139, 6515)

I tried setting the ports on my router and the config still would not work. Instead I installed Hamachi: hamachi.en.softonic.com/
a free and easy to use Virtual Private Network(VPN) program that is in English. It works and takes barely anytime to set up. I did not have much success with Tunngle as my German is a little rusty and it made it difficult to trouble shoot.
I will also review the ports when I get home to see if I missed one.
