The game worked for me originally and then quit working a few days later. My guess was changes made to the system. All of my drivers are and were up-to-date, it just quit working..

Reinstalling twice and using 'XP SP3' compatibility mode worked for me. Was a total pain in the arse to get it working and not even quite sure if it was worth it..

Also, that may not work for everyone but it did work for me.
I tried just about every compatibility mode and the 'XP SP3' was the only one that allowed me to play the game.
