I see a lot of folks are bothered by these events happening all the time, especially after you've invested in an Empire stretching to maybe hundreds of planets or something.
Once you colonize a world, with the 'Infinite Items Cheat' activated, make sure to use one of every main Colony Helper-ish items. These include the Happiness Amplifier, Anti-Eco Disaster thingy, and even an uber Defense satilite that's basically a Death Star guarding your planet. There are several which are all very helpful. When I use these with every colony, I barely have to do anything in terms of returning for maintenance. Although the defense satilite can hold off large invasions, I still answer some distress calls hear-and-there to mix it up with my rivals.
I hope this helps. I've learned a lot playing this game and it just get's more fun the more random-but-interesting things you discover since it's a 'Massive Multi-SINGLE Player Game.'

For those wanting a more notable and 'hard-core' RTS feel for the space stage, I'd recommend for you to try the 'Galactic Civilizations II' series. You can fully customize your own ships, empires, etc. That's all Empire building, setting up trade routes, diplomacy with other races, invading with massive fleets from fighters to gigantic destroyers (that you design), make your own missions as well, etc.

I also recommend using the 'Infinite Space Range' option and rushing your Empire's Captain to the center of the Galaxy ASAP. Once you have the 'Tree of Life' along with the 'Infinite Items' code working in your favor, you can use this baby to make any planet the highest grade of colony-world possible with one shot!
