Generally people are correct in saying farming is killing npc's to gain items you will sell later on. In terms of GW farming, its like doing the very first area and killing the "elite" mobs etc and hoping for gold items or black dye to drop.
Its not against the rules to do this, so the person who said that is misinformed. Especially with GW as it doesnt affect anyone else as each time you leave a town you are on your own/or just in the party you are in.
Oh and Don't forget some tuts on ASM and defeating DMA
