what do you mean? patch 1.6 still works for the 5th trainer, unless there has been another new update since then, then the only thing you can do is almost nothing. the only choice is to delete the game and let it re-download then make it so steam doesnt connect to the internet and then your stuck with the very first version of the game and the chance your saves will no longer work anymore. at least thats how Im pretty sure how to do that others may have better news.

The bad news is that updates are only available through Steam and it will only update to the latest patch. So you can't manually install an old patch.
An option, however, would be to uninstall the game and set Steam to offline mode and then reinstall from the DVDs. Then stick with the retail version.
The lesson learned from this is to always play ETW in Steam's offline mode.

There is actually no way to stop the updates. I would just like to start this post by saying **** you steam. Anyways back on topic. I re-installed my game 9 times today just to get this stupid game to the retail version. I tried everything even what was suggested here. The problem is that when you go off-line it won't install or play the game. To either install it or play it you got to be online for whatever reason and than it updates on you.
I am going to start some sort of petition with Total War to get them to not use steam in there next games and just resort to the multi-player of there older games. Personally I see no difference between M2: Total War MP and E:TW MP. They are the exact same thing except E:TW requires this stupid piece of **** steam.
Now I see why I cannot find any mods for E:TW. They don't want to deal with these constant patches.

The only bad thing about steam is when you get that "game is not available now" or some "server busy" error message. You buy the game and should be able to play it whenever you want, not being restricted by some crappy steam errors. It was a bad move to make it steam exclusive.
