In total, there are 124 gates, but you'll never close them all.
The closest I ever came to closing was 72 gates and that was before I started to Bruma to get to the Blades Fortress where Martin was at. I was halfway through being finished with the tasks for Martin in getting what he needed to open a gateway to Mankar Cameron's Paradise where I had to go and kill him.
If you count the gates afterwards, the three gates and the main siege engine gate, then that could be considered an additional 4 added onto the 72. But, I'm not counting the 3 small ones because I didn't go in them to close them.
You killed Martin? How? What quest?
