If you try to play a song from a CD while importing said CD, iTunes freezes both the play and the import, and the drive the disc is in stops running.

Wow, that's insanely lame.
I used to have problems with the iTunes Library being corrupted about every 3-4 months. Something about the way the file is written every time I modify my playlist etc.
I grimace every time an update shows up for it too, as I am afraid something will go wrong. It also always suggest installing Bonjour, Safari, etc. Pretty annoying IMO.
Ever heard of Songbird?Link It's a nice beta program that is, what iTunes should be.
I'm going to post about it in GD shortly.

I never update iTunes. I just download the latest version every time I reformat my HDD or I do something really stupid and wipe my iPod. >_>
And thanks for the link, but I tend to avoid Beta stuff. Maybe I'll drop iTunes for Songbird when they've finished it.

Essentially, all that Songbird does is read from you iTunes Library database file just like iTunes does.
To be safe though, if you wanted to do any editing, i.e. Playlist Creation, I would do the changes via iTunes itself.
But I do agree, Beta usage is a risky business.
