I've been playing as the UK, and have managed to get pretty powerful. The problem is that most of the world is listed as "hostile" and nothing I do changes it.
Is this a bug? Intentional? Or have I just missed something?
If anyone knows how to edit this, please let me know. Right now it sucks balls.

I have noticed this too. I even gained an ally, who was still "hostile". It may be a bug.

When you are powerful, people will feel threatened by you and be hostile towards you.
Imagine the other countries as wishing to maintain a balance of power and you are upsetting it.
In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'

the game uses an "expansionism" modifier that really screws up the campaign.
every land you take adds to this negative modifier and i think it can not be undone so eventually even your closest allies start to hate you because of it.
ideally CA would set up something that allows this modifier to decrease over time because in its current form it kills late game diplomacy.

Isn't that the point of the game?
Not just to capture a few territories and settle for the status quo.

I suppose, but it doesnt leave much room if you would liek to play a different way and not have everyone become your enemy and havta destroy them all. at this point the only nations that are very friendly to me are the native american tribes, and even that cost mucho denero. even nations I give land to either go to war with me or become hostile, and no matter how much bribing and gifting you do, it never gets better. then they just have tons of money to wage war against you.
