Ok, so i am trying out the boarding ship technique just for fun. As france, i have a heavy first rate, or whatever the most expensive thing is, and britain has a sixth rate. So i take out his sails a lil so i can board easier, and finally they throw the grapnels to hook on and they pull it in. So far, so good. Then, all of a sudden, by the DOZENS, men start to jump off the ship and try to get on to it. Out of 150 men, about 100 of them made it on to the ship, and then collapsed immediately, dead. The other fifty? well, those idiots missed the ship (or went through it) into the water. Suffice to say, i lost the freakin battle: a heavy first rate against a sixth rate, and i lost, because my men cant get to the ship alive. Only about 40 to 50 were smart enough to use the ropes to get across. I dont know if you realize it, but that is 290 men losing against less than 100. So i have three letters that can easily sum up my question:

    wtf?

Very off topic, and im sorry, but i have an 8800 gt and when i go into dialog in Oblivion, or when i am in the battle selection or the campaign in Empire Total war, the fan on the card blasts itself up and sounds life its gonna blow up. anyone know how to fix this? again, sorry for the off-topic point.

I have no real idea but maybe its because the 1st rate is too big to board a smaller ship? Maybe its a bug? I don't usualy board ships so I can't really say. Although the first (and only) ship board I did I lost... despite having more crew.

that was my theory, the size. maybe i will try it with the same size ship. This needs a major overhaul if that is the case. Also, i did notice that the guys with guns dont like to use them when on the ship (at all, only 1 or 2 shots fired throughout the entire battle). They actually shoot more when they are further away from the enemy ship.

Throw a couple of squads of rangers on your ships. Maybe they can make the jump.

As to the video card fan winding up during those portions of the games, my suggestion would be to lower the graphics settings, at least temporarily, to see if it still winds up. I am using the 8800 GTS, which only has a slightly faster memory clock, and I do not get that problem in either one of those games. And are you sure its the GPU fan, and not your CPU fan?

Does it make the computer sound like its "rattling". Mine does that when I'm on the campaign and in a battle and I have a Zotac GF8800 GT AMP!.

I thought it might of been my OCZ RAM cooler (because it was loose) making the noise but I removed that and it still rattles. Though I am suspicious it might be my HDD coolers making the noise.

Download EVEREST (theres a trial you can get). It should tell you the temperatures of certain things.

Also, does putting land infantry onto ships show them in ship battles and they fight? Or was you just joking? I never tried it.

im positive it is the fan on the video card. i took off the side and when i stopped the fan with my finger, the noise completely went away. i was reading online and i found out that the fan was the main reason many people passed on the 8800 gt. So i either have to deal with it, use headphones (which i have tried, but it really does take away from the sound experience at least in my opinion) or get a new video card. It came with the XPS 420, which i have so im too afraid to get a new video card because when these computers come with pre-determined specs, they usually know what they are doing and what cooperates with what.

As towards changing your Card an 8800 GTS should work fine. I have 2 Asus 8800 GTS cards running in Sli the only difference really would be size and space??

I have tried running a single card to see if i get the Fan Problem your experiencing but cant say i do so i dont have advice on that.

Im using a Antec 900 Case with 2 x Asus 8800 GTS Sli and a Intel Quad Core Q6600 95Watt G0 Stepping processor with 2 GB ram running on a Asus Striker Motherboard.
Can anybody tell me what is needed to run Total war on Highest Graphics settings (custom or preset).
