Another option you can do is just download K-Lite codec pack and reinstall the new codec pack then restart machine and if it was a codec issue it should be resolved.

sounds don't work if they are associated to a different program under the explorer tools options check that the ogg and wav sounds are associated with windows media player if they are not then set them and try again. Also if your using vista and a creative labs card download alchemy to get sound. the codecs are not the problem.
