might want to check on the bioware/masseffect forums...they have thier own tech support....what you described is a common symptom of: a) CD-key that was already used b) lack of internet connection for key verification (some copies require internet to verify the key) c) not having permissions set to let you save the entered key to the file (administrator rights usually solves that)
if a) you will have to contact EA games or Bioware if b) you will either have to enable an internet connection for the game or give up - no refunds, i know, i tried with spore if c) why are you playing at work?...no seriously though, the most common reason for not having administrator rights is playing on a computer that isn't yours - simply log in as an administrator or tell the game to "run as administrator"
note: i run windows xp and 2k, windows vista has LOTS of problems so if you are on vista you will definatly want to check the bioware/masseffect forums
