Fallout 3 is a "Games for Windows LIVE!" title. Windows LIVE! is designed to prevent trainers and other programs from changing anything in the game. It scans the memory process every so often and will crash the game if it detects the trainer. There are a couple of solutions:
1) RENAME THE FALLOUT3.EXE.CAT file in the game's folder to something else. This will DISABLE Live and the trainer will work fine.
2) When Windows LIVE crashes, simply alt-tab back to the game and leave the crash dialog on the screen. The game will continue to play and trainer will work fine.
NOTE: Windows LIVE is NOT disabled simply by not logging into it. The protection still exists. Use one of the methods above.
In addition to Windows LIVE, there are also multiple versions of the game being distributed. We have (so far) created a trainer for the Retail version, German version and the D2D version. Please try both of them on your game, especially if your game crashes as soon as you press F1.
We apologize for the inconvenience of having to disable Windows LIVE in order for the trainer to work and we are looking at alternatives, but this is the best we can offer at the moment.

PWizard,or anyone who can answer
I am using Windows xp, and have the folder options selected to see hidden files and extensions, but I cannot find the exe.cat file extention. The exe files that I have listed are: 1) Main fallout icon exe 2) Fallout3.exe (which is a security catagory, is this the file? 3) Fallout2.exe.cfg
I am sorry if this sounds dumb, but I am just not sure which one. Thanks for any help with this, and for the trainer.

Renaming the .CAT file resolved my issue with the trainer not working.
Just as a heads up to anyone else who needs to rename the file: I did need to reboot after renaming the file in order for the trainer to begin working.
I don't know if this was because I'd previously launched the game prior to the rename or some other facet of Vista.
But rename + reboot = trainer worked like a charm.
Thanks for the hard work PWizard!

SMehan -- #2 is the file you're looking for.
you can rename it to anything... fallout.exe.cat_bak for instance.

Just a heads up. Renaming the .cat file disabled my previous savegames. So if you're gonna use this trick you have to start from scratch. Unless someone has a way around this?
EDIT: and alt-tab'ing back into the game didnt work for me either :P

I have changed the Fallout3.exe security file to Fallout3.exe.cat_bak. But the trainer cannot find game, I have tried to reboot and trainer still cannot find game. I'm not sure what else to do .

perhaps you changed the wrong file. make sure you're running fallout3.exe. disable all antivirus, etc.
