If you have 5.1 surround sound speakers and its not working with the game...
you need to quoted from the gamestop forums:
"I had this problem, too. I'm running Vista64 with an X-fi card. I had no surround, only stereo. I was able to fix it by editing an .ini.
Look in the "\Far Cry 2\Data_Win32\SoundBinary" folder and edit the DARE.INI file.
"DISABLE_OPTIMISATION=TRUE"
Change it to false. "

I'll try it tonight on mine. XP SP3 with a XFI card I was wondering why it says its 5.1 capable but was only using FR an FL instead of full surround. Will be nice to hear some of these explosions rumbling the sub at my feet.

Mine is working already, perhaps it is just an issue with Vista 64?

Not just vista issue......i play the game on xp......
there is a auto detect feature when the game installs, that decides if you have 5.1 or not.........so somehow people with 5.1 still get false detection........... So if this happens to you.....The fix above works for vista and xp

wow - worked for me
this together with the SRS plugin brings the game to a new level. all I need now is somebody to throw sand in my face when I use the buggy in the desert and it'll be perfect...
