I haven't played either, but from what I've heard, all KoTOR II is is KoTOR I with updated graphics and made by a different developer. KoTOR I then.

KOTOR I was way different. Better storyline. Better choices. Unknown planet. Leviathan.
IMO, KOTOR II sucked.

Kotor 2 has the better game mechanics (because it's basically an upgraded version of the Kotor 1 mechanics), but the story and the characters are worse and the first and the last area of the game is really, really boring. And there's also the side quests that weren't finished before they released the game (the HK factory side quest for example) that you constantly find signs of (like the HK droids that are everywhere, the dialogue with HK-47 about the HK droids and the big empty area behind doors you can't open in the Nar Shaddaa docks for example)
So I have to say that Kotor 1 is the better game because I'm the type of gamer who puts the games story first and its mechanics second.
But even though Kotor 2 lacks a lot of thing, it's still a good game.

KOTOR 1 was innovative and new when it came out. You could tell that Bioware took their time in developing the game
KOTOR 2 was a fine game. But it was unforgivably harmed with the subtraction of a lot of content. Major story lines and the machine planet were dropped for the sake of meeting a deadline!
