Soul Calibur isn't exactly known for it's incredibly in-depth story; it's known for its fighting, and that's exactly what it did. I found the story mode perfect; considering you have to beat it with every character to unlock some of the achievements.

Well, all fighting game's are this way. Where have you guys been? Story mode in a fighting game has always been a few fights, but then you must do it with every character and it ties a lot of the stories together. Soul Calibur IV is a great game, if you want a longer game play GTA or Final Fantasy,haha.
