i like this game. I own swots, homeworld 1, CA, 2, and many others. Its a simple to play game. Takes a while but its fun if you enjoy these types of games.
there will be mods galore for this. Right now with the beta tools out, you can mod stats etc etc but anything major like adding new races or more cap ships is just a bit out of reach. Its easy to mod though, just takes some time and effort.
I see no reason however for people to compare sins to hw2. Both are RTS but they are very different. i like em both.
remember the AI isnt the only thing to fight, you can go online and try MP. Its a bit buggy at the moment but still fun.

i wonder if someday a strategy game based on starwars comes like rise of the nations kinda. I have played Homeworld 1,2, and starwars empire at war but they don't feel like the old school resource building RTS's.
Sins of a solar empire is a decent game only if it had a campaign mode

Sins is a very good game, but misses on a few too many points to be truly great: It's billed as a "real-time 4X" game, but its 4X elements are fairly lacking compared to a good real 4X game (ie: Alpha Centauri, GalCiv2, Civ 4). Diplomacy is really lame. The research tree is RTS-sized rather than 4X sized. (On a large-scale 3 star system map, I researched the *whole* tree before I conquered even my first star system). RTS-like unit caps make it hard to attack/defend on multiple fronts on a large map. IMHO, it's not really "epic" enough to get away with not providing a campaign, the way, say, Alpha Centauri or Civ 4 is. Think of it more as an large-scale, slow-paced RTS game than a real-time 4X game: it's first and foremost an RTS, with some 4X elements.
That said, it's still a very good, very well done RTS game, with the potential to get even better over time: Stardock has stated they will continue their post-release support in the same manner as GalCiv2, and Stardock has done a great job evolving and polishing GalCiv2 over the years. I think it's worth the money.

mnkforch: Try playing without a trainer, hard Al, and I bet they will show up at your doorstep. The Al checks your strength vs his, and knows he will loose a direct attack when you use the trainer to get everything you want. ( Me personally don't use the trainer for anything but instant planet upgrades and research when I use it, as the others options removes every hint of a challenge in the game ) At least they try when I use this approach, and has had lots of interesting battles with it ( Only problem is my computer has a hard time handling over 1000 ships in a system )

Hey Gunny. This is my first time posting, but I've followed your posts from WH40K.
I think you, as a RTS gamer, will enjoy the gravity well battles. Fighting around a planet can allow for some fantastic tactial maneuvering with the right set up.
As a planet/civ building game, I would have to say the game reminds me distinctly of an older Win95 game called Star Wars Rebellion. While you're not utilizing planets in the same way as in SWR, it helped me feel more at home with the combination of RTS and Turn-based.
It was a pretty fair learning curve, but I've fallen in love with this game. The experience is amazing, especially if you have an upper-end rig. I play it more than I play Soulstorm.
Either way, I think since you have a more militaristic and tactical mind anyway, you'll enjoy it for the sheer replayability and the newness offered with every map. And while there isn't a "single player campaign" each map offers a unique scenario if you follow it propperly. There is a story to be told if you read the documentation and really watch the maps.
