So is that due to a bad rip, or is the developers?

I would not be too surprised if this “GOLD” release turned out to be a level disabled DEMO, made into looking like the real thing with a weak copy protection. Get the so called “scene” to work for them in spreading a game through P2P (faster then any DEMO file vault on the net) with a small well placed error. Ubisoft knows the game will get hacked anyway sooner or later so why not have the gaming community do its PR... Just me being conspirational?

That would be you being perfectly right... Ubisoft games don't get stolen from within, never have; and this is really a fool-proof strategy.
I mean it convinced ME to get the game as soon as it hits the shelves, bugs and all, just to add it to the collection; and I don't really buy games unless they're worth every cent.
This could develop into a really good marketing strategy for future PC games... like you said, it WILL get cracked sooner or later, so why not just make everyone crave for more?
P.S. Great observational talent you got there.

They might track more then that. Anyone noticed the update check when you start? It does connect to a server, that should logically not be online until after the game has been released officially. Unless it's there to track how many copies have been spread and played, and the number of times played...
