Hammer Ons and Pull Offs are a must for most (if not all) stages on Expert (and quite a few on hard). You can learn about it in the tutorials on the game.

Oh My . My 16 year old cousin can't even get through 2% on that song on hard or expert and this 9 year old just creamed that game! I wonder what his fingers feel like after that?
