You just pit him/her for a while and then the thing will come up saying what you would like to name your dog.

you have to play with it or stroke it until the screen comes up saying you can name your puppy

i had a ton of fun tryin' to teach Guard her name. it didn't take long for the screen to pop up, but it did take long to name her. and, if your dog gets confused while learning it, it takes even longer.
