I was thinking the same thing. Once you get the cat, keep him in the house for a few weeks (or until it is fully grown) and then introduce it to the outside world.
I remember taking my cat outside long ago (which ran away because everyone took a road trip out of state and didn't return for a while...but we had our neighbor check the food and water everyday) and he would just cling to me every time I took him outside. Eventually he went outside by himself, and slowly but surely, he expanded his boundaries, always returning home...until of course we left...
Cat's are one of the most independent animals out there...or at least the most independent pets...
