You CAN do that actually. Use the cheats. The first cheat listed allows you to edit at what number of kills you get the 1st, 2nd and 3rd upgrades for each individual weapon. Go have a look. All you need to do if find the Thompson, and do either 1 of 2 things:

#1: Put the kills needed for the number 1 and 2 upgrades at 1 kill and 2 kills respectively, then put number of kills for 3rd upgrade VERY VERY high,

OR

#2: Put the kills for number 3 VERY VERY high, then use the "upgradeweapon" cheats in game to level up your weapon twice.

thats why i download from EA store, i never buy the cds, even if it costs a extra 20, i buy the download, this may never happen, the CD key is built in, you cant lose it, AND you cant lose the cd!! its a win win win win.
