Don’t panic harlemboy101, we all suck at something, sometime. (No pun intended).

First you need to bring up the game console by pressing the ‘ key. That’s the second to the right of the L key on my keyboard. Then, if for example, you want to create two units of “Dismounted Feudal Knights” in London. This is what you type…

    create_unit London “Dismounted Feudal Knights” 2 9 3 3

Notice that London starts with a capital L and it is not inside inverted commas because it is only a one word place name.
“Dismounted Feudal Knights” is inside inverted commas because it is a three word unit name and each word starts with a capital letter.
The 2 is the number of units and the other numbers make sure that they have maximum attributes.

Giving them to characters is more problematic as the names don’t always work. For instance.
    This doesn’t work

    create_unit “King William the Conqueror” “Dismounted Feudal Knights” 2 9 3 3

    Whereas this does.

    create_unit William “Dismounted Feudal Knights” 2 9 3 3

    And so does this.

    create_unit “Captain Robin” “Dismounted Feudal Knights” 2 9 3 3

I find that the best way to do it for characters is to create them in a settlement and then march them off to join up with the character you want to give them to. The names I’ve used assume that you are the English by the way. So you obviously use the appropriate names depending on which faction you are.

Good luck and keep trying. It does work.

Only Denmark, Holy Roman Empire, Milan, Poland, Portugal, Sicily, Spain or Venice can have “Hand Gunners” and you enter it like this...

    create_unit Frankfurt “Hand Gunners” 4 9 3 3

If you are the Turks or Moors you can use “ME Hand Gunners”

    Don’t forget the quotation marks!
