Ok, here's a little game glitch that works in favor of the player. Go to the manufacturing screen and choose an item to produce. It will deduct the manufacturing cost from your budget. Back out then go back in and out and in.....you get the idea. Basically it deducts the cost of the item you wish to make only once, but continually refunds you for that same amount over and over. The first few things you research take forever to rack up a fair amount of cash, but once you can make some good $hit like that beastly Retaliator or what ever it was, just a few clicks will slam out serious cash. Now I must warn you, this makes the game seriously easier, personally I only use it for financial emergencies, but hey, use at your own discretion.
On another note, a good game strategy is to make a few bases solely devoted to manufacturing. Make a crap load of workshops in em and have nothing there but scientists and a small squad of soldiers to protect the base. When they arent pumpin out things to arm your recruits with, have them mass-producing a certain item that requires no compnents and can sell for much more than it takes to make. I'll let you figure out what it is.
