I suggest one or both of your. Write some details for Devil in regards to how to replicate the freezes and crashes. That way we can easily test and hopefully find the cause.
If you also could provide save games, with location, that would a great deal.
And lastly. Make a report so we have a record on it and Devil has notes to go by.

Trainer is no longer working.

1. Does your game version match the trainer version?
2. Are there any special instructions that need to be followed?
3. Are you running Aurora as admin? Not doing that can cause issues for a lot of trainers.
4. Did you extract Aurora as opposed to just running it?
5. Do you have the newest version of Aurora?
6. Have you reinstalled/verified the game files?
7. Have you restarted your computer before trying the trainer again?
8. Have you set the anti-virus exclusions for Aurora?
9. Are you opening the game from a supported launcher?
10. Are you running the newest version of the trainer?
11. Are you playing a beta version of the game?
12. Are you using mods?

What exactly doesn't works?

Using latest version of trainer. Just bought game today so game must be newer version than trainer is meant for. Getting the following error:

Therefore, game has been updated since trainer. Is there a way to roll back the version of the game on Steam?

There is no way to roll back version on steam, your best bet is to post a report on the trainer so it can get enough of those to get an update.

What does as intended mean? I've tested, I see it says 999 next to the skill but it still won't let me unlock any. I tried leveling up one skill and still just locked to one point on that skill. Not sure if bug or as intended.
