Trainer tested working as intended here with my save game. We do not own the DLC. Unlimited consume was tested using Shelter Fruit in Pouch.
Use fruit, then close inventory, then come back and the fruit returns.

Was just coming to reply to my comment to let others know that it's a little different now and does indeed work. Prior to the DLC the items stayed in the menu and you could mash it to fill the buff the whole way, but now they disappear and you just need to close menu and open it again.
