This is because the value is the total of all XP earned in that category. Use the in-game amount to figure out how much to add then add that to the amount shown the trainer. E.g. trainer says 100k, in-game says I need 35k more, set trainer to 135k.

Thank you so much. Altho, as i've read (or thought i'd read) every post in this DL2 thread, I'm wondering how you knew that. The trainer read me doesn't say it, the trainer "i" comments don't say it and I don't remember seeing it anywhere in this thread.
