it's a halo game and operate like any other halo game.
that means grenades are god tier and MP will spam them/rockets into victory. SP sticky nades like the plasma and the spike one are also god tier as enemies will run and retreat into a pack letting you effectively clear mobs in 1 easy go.
TLDR: never not a good reason to use a nade in halo
everyones mileage varies of course, i just found for legendary runs a BR, nades and an assault rifle for backup was all i needed.

On Heroic onwards (and Legendary in particular) they're a vital part of your kit, either killing most non-miniboss enemies outright or getting them to move and thereby allowing you to hit them while exposed. Heck, for some of the minibosses and bosses they feel all but mandatory to do enough damage with the resources available.
Granted, tagging enemies with stickies can be a bit tricky on Legendary in my experience, since they seem to have pretty quick reaction times - but even if you miss completely it's still not a total waste, since a dodging enemy is an enemy that isn't shooting you to death... which is one of the things that made the first boss a combination of incredibly obnoxious and halfway manageable for me (Tharsimonious? I don't remember the name - the souped-up shielded brute with a Hydra and a Shotgun), since you pretty much NEEDED to tag him with your Plasma nades to take his shields down quickly, then tag him again with the sticky-shrapnel grenades, and he just loved jetpack boosting wherever the hell he wanted - and when he wasn't doing that, he was 3-shotting me with whatever he had on hand, or Death-From-Aboving me into oblivion.
Legendary's been a bit rough so far, but until then never felt unreasonable or unmanageable to get through first/second/third try. That boss though... took some time and practice.

While I am new to Halo and am not a Legendary level player I still find grenades vital for most of the reasons above and if i take a mob out with a nade that is more ammo left for the rest of the fight before i have to find a reload spot or change guns. ( I dont like constantly swapping guns and like to use my battle rifle and assault mostly except for special circumstances
