In the game I find that things start out very slow but then things get moving very fast and its not easy to do things when all these things are vying for my attention all at once. Keep in mind that I'm playing on the easiest difficulty. I think the problem might be that I'm fully upgrading my rackets as soon as I set them up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Expand quickly to empty buildings and rackets that only have low-level thugs.
Use synergy between the businesses.
Pay attention to liquor, I found one brewery can supply a lot.
When taking over a business some buildings have cheaper costs for establishing certain types of businesses.
Conquer one neighborhood at a time, don't be afraid to use truces and ally occasionally to buy time while you expand.
