Is this something new Lenny, have you tried it?
Seems like when I played Mass Effect 1&2 I had to agree to a 3rd party EULA but that was about all.
All I can say is that its something new to me for EA. I remember when I read about this in the Steam forums someone compared it when you but a game like Far Cry 5 and you have to sign into Ubisofts software.

Doesn't seem to be a real downside - guess I'll buy from Steam for the simple reason that I open Steam 10x more per week than I open Origin.
10X is being kind for me. More like 100X here.
I like buying them on Steam whenever possible. We have the Steam Community which always has extra info for games like Tools, manuals, maps, mods and a good discussion forum for every game. I also prefer keeping Screenshots there where the bulk of them are anyway. Same goes for achievements.
Like them or not, we get more with our games there. ¯\_(ツ_/¯

Agreed not only that Steam is a great gaming platform it's also a pretty good social networking service much like Facebook and others with focus on gaming and gaming related topics.
