Just to add onto this post, I am experiencing the EXACT same issue with the new trainers loading properly using the Trainer Template format. I'm curious if we have similar hardware.
Intel i-7 8700 16 GB RAM EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
I use BitDefender for my AV and my trainers folder is also added to exceptions.

Similar-ish. I have an i7-3770 and a GTX 980. Same RAM though.
I have uninstalled Macrium, and that has not had an effect on new trainers launching. I haven't had time to try redoing the graphics drivers, but I'll try that another day.

@Redfyre: Bitdefender is more aggressive and known to cause issues. I don't remember how its called but there is an advanced protection you need to exclude the trainer from as well. So there are two lists of exclusions the trainer must be part of it. Should be covered by the video tutorials Taurus made: www.cheathappens.com/virus_warning.asp

Finally had time to sit down and troubleshoot some more. I've run DDU and with no graphics drivers currently installed, trainers open correctly. I now in the process of cleanly reinstalling Nvidia drivers, so wish me luck.
UPDATE: OK! Well! It's working! So it was the graphics drivers after all. Would never have guessed that, so thanks to the user who suggested that one. If they screw up again I guess I'll know where to look first

Good for health, bad for education.

Turns out that I had to add each individual trainer to the exceptions list in BitDefender, not only the Trainers folder that they were located in! I also did a clean install of my Nvidia drivers just to see if that would resolve the issue. It did not.
Thank you!!!
