Since once I fire it up on steam and go to skirmish the game crashes.

The trainer DOES work with the steam version of the game. I have used it many times just today. The problem is that you were using it with skirmish mode which it was probably never intended for. It does work with the in game campaigns. One thing to keep in mind is start the game from the desktop instead of from Steam itself. If you start the game from Steam then the trainer will not work.

On my copy, fresh download from Steam, it crashes when entering ANY mission, even campaigns. This only happens when the trainer is active. If I wait and activate after the mission starts, it crashes the game as well.

The trainer works, as mentioned, don't start it from steam, start it from the desktop shortcut then start up the trainer.
