It seems there is a semi-widespread problem (pc and even on ps4) that some save files while playing get seemingly corrupted and if you try to load them the game crashes to desktop.
I was 18 hours into the game when it started doing this to me.
I spoke a Bethesda rep on reddit today and they gave me a solution that worked and thought I would share it.
Just "opt in" for beta updates on Prey and get the latest pre-patch. It solves the problem and all previous games that crashed on load now load up properly.
Best of all... the trainer still works even with the beta update!

I was just going to ask if the beta patch works with Trainer. Glad to hear it still works
