When I start the game a message appears and disappears saying that the game is starting but never does.

Definitely a good idea. I've followed up on submitting problems like this to Steam support in the past and they never reply so I thought I would try here in case anybody had any ideas as to what the cause of the problem might be. I'm starting to think that maybe I should not buy games through steam anymore. LOL
