Silly question but before I can invade a country do I have to declare war on it? I know in real life you have to but this is a game though.

Yes you must have a "valid" claim on the country before being able to declare war. And yes you must declare war first.
It's difficult to "serve a person". But it is far more difficult to bring up "people who serve".

You have to generate a claim, which, depending on the set objectives, varies in volume of the requried number of political power. But, in order to be able to generate a claim, the world tension needs to be high enough, but that rule has exceptions.

Console Command: allowdiplo
Using that command, you do not have to justify anything. You can declare war willy nilly. The command itself unlocks all diplomatic options no matter what.

Without using the console command, and if tension allows you to generate, it's faster to not specify provinces to conquer. The only reason you need to specify is if you call allies and you need the points during the peace negotiations.
