"AV isn't running" picked my attention: it's a well known fact that some anti-virus apps will still block processes even after "stopping" the program, some have to be completely uninstalled and the registry purged to get rid of the left-over nasties
Most anti-virus app will let you "white list" programs you know are inoffensive (be careful)

I'll check that. Though I would have thought if that was the problem, it would have been doing it to me much sooner.

Same problem here. Every trainer is working fine in offline mode. But the trainers were running online without any problems before.
Since a few days, even the right click with my mouse takes 30 seconds, till the menu will appear. There are no changes at my pc. It takes round about 40 seconds to choose "run as administrator". Then you can selecet "Yes" or "No" and after that, the trainer blinks up for 0,2 seconds in the taskbar an dieappears.
I can promise you, it got nothing to do with my pc, or my (not installed) Anti Virus Software.

I had the same problem (even the same trainer, Xcom2). Right clicking the trainer would do nothing but sit and seem to freeze up. It turned out to be microsoft anti-malware. Turning that off solved it for me. If you need instructions on how to do this I used this superuser.com/questions/494163/disabling-microsoft-antimalware-service Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot to powergrind! It was Windows Defender.

Quick note on this:
If you have Windows 10, please upvote the following entry in Windows Feedback:
"Windows Defender should block attacks and let users know that an attack was blocked, as well as the type of the attack, risk level, and the source that enabled the attack"
Under the following category: Apps and Games > Windows Defender
The UX design behind Defender in Windows 10 was dumbed down to the point where it does not provide sufficient information for troubleshooting stuff like this. It is important to keep the user in the loop on these things. If users were alerted on Defender blocking trainers, it would have made troubleshooting less painful.
