Whenever I activate the trainer, load up my game, then go to the in-game menu, the game crashes before i even activate any options.

You probably have the first version of the trainer.
They have updated the game once, try re-downloading the trainer from the site.

It's the updated trainer that causes it. the original trainer didn't give me any issues like these.

Weird... for me it was the other way around. The old trainer crashed the game. Fresh download cured that.
