For anyone having the problems that have been plaguing this thread, usually a good rule of thumb is that your anti-virus is breaking something.
If, like myself, you don't like the idea of turning off part or all of your computer protection just to cheat at a several year old game, don't worry! I'm here to help.
Most antivirus and firewall programs allow you to make exceptions to the protection. If you don't know how to do that for your software, then googling "how to add exception" + your antivirus will most likely lead you to the right answer.
For those of you who already tried this, you may notice that the bloody thing still breaks. Setting the executable as an exception is not enough in this case. For THIS cheat, you also need to set the temporary file made in %temp% as an exception. Navigate there by typing in %temp% into your file explorer bar. Alternatively, it's located at C:/users/$USERNAME/appdata/local/temp.
To do this, you may want/need to make a temporary temporary file with the same name, an empty text document will do. The program always looks for a file of the same name, so don't worry about name changes. Mine was ~Mnn133.tmp, however yours may be different, just make sure that you are changing the file extension/type as well, instead of naming it ~Mnn133.tmp.txt. After setting BOTH files, the .tmp and the .exe I downloaded to be excluded, it worked fine with the firewall and antivirus chugging away merrily.
Please note that this was tested with the latest Bitdefender, and using this method with other antivirus programs may not work, not be possible, or brick your pc. As always, cheat responsibly. I, PWizard, the cheathappens staff or anyone else bear no responsibility for everything being on fire.
