I think they've also changed the way damage is calculated against your health recently, in the interest of making "infinite health" cheats not work as well. It seems like if something does more than your total maximum HP in damage, it instantly destroys you instead of having to calculate damage. I wonder if there's a way to either permanently set your HP above 0 or permanently add a potion to your inventory to combat this...

It works the same way as before. First the damage will be applied and then your health gets reset back to maximum. So if anything does more damage than you have health left you will be dead.

Ah - I must not have gotten far enough into the more difficult characters to notice regularly. The different between starting with 3 hp and 2 is pretty significant (to say nothing of starting with .5hp!)
