I just had an awesome fcking epiphany:

It looks like every new patch dissociates the gun energy cheat. When I was running 3.51 with the 3.51 trainer, the game was flawless (as far as no crashes, not the game itself).
The 3.51 trainer works in 3.52 except for gun energy which is what happened to the 3.50 trainer in 3.51.
I do get the odd CTD, but can't confirm or deny whether it is the game or the mis-matched trainer.
Too bad we can't get some AGI in the trainer to "self-repair"
