I'm seeing them a little differently. I'm only recently playing the whole series and I'm now in AC Revelations. When you say 1st, 2nd and 3rd, do you mean #1, #2 and #3 or in the order they came out, 1,2 and Brotherhood?
For me, AC-1 was meh. AC-2 was fantastic and Brotherhood was excellent as well, maybe just a tick below AC-2 but still a lot of fun. I have a few titles to go yet, but the interest is definately still strong. According to most, things start getting a little less fun somewhere around where I'm at now, in Revelations.

I was strictly referring to the 3 games that had naval combat when talking about the gameplay in the series as a whole.
More or less I think the combat was at its peak in Brotherhood but slowly started being dumbed down in Revelations and really got worse after AC3 with the only improvement being dual wielding. Many would also say the assassin system in brotherhood made the game too easy. My opinion on the assassin system is that it actually added to the game and its not as if you were forced to use them because you could simply play the game without them and then use them when you wanted to just screw around.
I was wondering which 3 games Easy meant in his post above but yes about the Assassins. You get 12 full-fledged A's waiting for you to call, and things get decidedly easy.
My biggest compaint if I have one with AC-B is I finally got all 12 to Assassin level so late in the game and I did them as soon as the game offered them, too. Then after that, there wasn't enough combat to really utilize them in a good fight beside you. There wer places to use them, yes, but I had hoped for more. Still, was a ton of fun.
So how about the next 3 games after Revs? I bought like 5 games at once during the Steam sale and all were 66% to 75% off which is what I had been waiting on for awhile. Are they plenty good enough to play, or what's your take on them? Time better spent elsewhere?

when I saw the assassin system I grinded the game before I played through the story and I tore up the town killing and looting guards.
I made more money killing guards with the assassins than I ever did with sidequests xD. If you go back and play it I recommend you level them up to their highest rank so you don't randomly lose them.
as for games after AC:Rev well
- AC3 was a buggy god awful mess with really bad DLCs so i recommend skipping the game and simply watching a cutscene movie on yoube. Its literally one of the worst games in the franchise mostly because of the bugs, poor hit detection, crappy DLCs, and countering can be hit or miss(generally miss).
- AC:Liberation is a smaller game similar to AC3 although I only played a little before I grew bored of it mostly because the story is irrelevant amongst the history of the Assassins vrs Templars.
- AC4 is an amazing game with really good DLCs and has more of an adventurous feel
- AC:Unity is a big step in the wrong direction having almost similar combat bugs/problems as AC3 and it doesn't add anything innovative outside of the phantom blade which essentially is just a crossbow.
- AC:Rogue is one of the most refreshing games in the series when it comes to the story but I won't say much because it will ruin it although it has a main character you will actually grow to like just as much as Ezio.
