Ryse: Son of Rome Message Board  

Ryse comes to PC after launching on Xbox One with mixed reception. Before anything else, this game looks gorgeous from both an artistic and graphical stand-point. Its rendition of ancient Rome, while perhaps not entirely accurate, looks great. The brutal executions that you perform while a mind-numbing large amount of debilitation make the mid-combat executions feel extremely satisfying.

That is, however, where the praises end. Enemy variety seems shockingly low. Granted, I haven't reached the end yet; but, I found the same bearded fat man with a shield about 20 times in the first 0 minutes of the game. Why is it that only bearded barbarians can hold a shield? I didn't look too closely, but I felt that the other throw-away enemies were also lacking in variety. I'm pretty sure, they have less faces and models than Rome Total War 2.

Game-play feels relatively responsive, although the auto-aim for the javelins make ranged combat somewhat annoying. Executions can be done for various bonuses and is also the only way to heal. These make you invulnerable and proceed to give you a series of button prompts. Regardless of whether you hit the right buttons or not, the execution will happen. These look great both early and late game, but you will soon get bogged down with execution after execution until you just want to take a quick break during the sequence.

The story is vaguely reminiscent of the Gladiator movie with some supernatural twists. Voice acting, sound design, and cut-scenes were well done although quite forgettable. Overall, this game is a 3/5 for me. It looks great when you first dig into it; but once the glamour fades away, all that's left is a shell of a game.

EXACTLY my thoughts, a decent interactive movie. Challenging gameplay is almost non existent.

I think graphics/story give this game a solid 7.0 maybe an 8.0 on a lot of peoples scale. But like you said it's an interactive movie with a very very very small upgrade system.

Multiplayer will keep you entertained for a moment tho. But using trainer for gold kinda ruins the armor gathering quest to get all top tier loot!

If you don't want to fork out the money there are always other means. If you just want to watch the show there's youtube. But I'm going through it on play through 4 and soon to be 5 between console and pc. I've enjoyed this story and what the game does offer quite a bit.

Interactive movie could be the one thing to call it, but it's beautiful to look at, and I have to admit, I'm a lover of roman armor and stuff, the price is quite high so luckily a friend family shared with me, I enjoyed it multiplayer is alright, I am a big fan of the tv show spartacus so I might be bias with this.

well there are vids on youtube called game cinematic movies which compile all of the cinematics from one game into a single video.

I watch those now and then for games which I know the gameplay sucks like for that Deadpool game as an example.
