Its an experimental build. If the developers changes the way the item pickup works then it will affect the trainer cheat. But as long as it works, which it does from your post, I see no reason to fix it just to get back the way the item pickup has worked before. Because if I start doing that, in an experimental version of a game that has +100 opt-in channels, I might have to do that every few days which is contraproductive.
It looks as if they've done something with the picking up and dropping it; but it does seem to work fine, albeit with a bit of a workaround.
The one I'm using at the minute is to pick it up, hold it for a few seconds, place it back in the bar and then leave it hovering over the item and "most" of the time it seems to pick up which item was selected and work as intended.
Downside is, if you're last item before this one was a blueprint which it didn't detect the new item and it duplicates the blueprint instead, the game with then crash to desktop which is a bit of a headache.
This also seems to be the case if you use the unlimited items option and have a blueprint in the bars (or open the inventory). It's caught me out a couple of times.
